New Driver Safe Motoring Presentations 2019/20 Official Launch

New Driver Safety Ambassadors officially launched their Safe Motoring presentations yesterday, September 24th 2019, at Lagan College, Belfast, for the academic year 2019/2020.

Lagan College invited New Driver Safety Ambassadors to speak to Year 13 students about safe motoring. The talk covers all elements of safe driving including learning to drive, buying a car, insurance, looking after your vehicle, and road safety.

Mr Simon Hare, Head of Post 16 Studies at Lagan College Belfast, stated, “We see New Driver NI as an integral part of helping our young sixth form students understand the importance of driver safety.”

Each year, New Driver Safety Ambassador Limited visits sixth forms in schools to deliver safe motoring presentations. Their aim is to educate all new drivers and passengers on making good motoring decisions. All participants are also given a free New Driver NI magazine.

Students are asked to sign the New Driver Pledge which includes the following 5 rules:

  1. Respect the Speed Limit!
  2. No Mobile While Mobile!
  3. Never Drive When Tired!
  4. Not a Drop, Not a Drag!
  5. Belt Up, Front & Back!

Stephen Savage, Project Manager at New Driver Safety Ambassadors, commented “The programme has been run for over five years now and grows each year.  Feedback from schools, teachers and students is very positive. Making the Pledge is a commitment to being as safe as possible on the roads.”

“Too many young people are still losing their lives or being seriously injured on the roads across Northern Ireland.  We aim to reduce these figures every year.  We have set an ambitious target to get 10,000 Pledges this year, and we have made a good start since September.”

The programme is completely free for schools as funding is provided by corporate sponsors, including Charles Hurst First Time Buyer Centre, CRASH Services, Hankook Tyres, AB&C Insurance, DriveTech UK, Specsavers and JMK Solicitors.  The Department for Infrastructure and some Policing and Community Safety partnerships also provide support.
